This season, we are proud to share the work of a winemaker and entrepreneur who truly helped pave the way for other women, Marty Bannister. As her son Brook takes the helm of the family business, he is a natural ally to women in wine.
According to Ann Matasar, author of Women of Wine: The Rise of Women in the Global Wine Industry, before 1964 California had fewer than five women winemakers, all self-taught and virtually unknown. When Marty Bannister hit the scene in the 1970s, along with such contemporaries as Heidi Barrett and Merry Edwards, she was one of mighty tribe of pioneering women. After founding the trusted enological services business, Vinquiry laboratories (now Enartis) with Mary Ann Graf, she then launched Bannister Wines in 1989. Her impact in the field of enology is lasting.
Brook Bannister is a furniture designer by trade who circled back to the family business as a second career. He brings a commitment to his mother’s ideals, along with a fresh perspective (apparent in wines like the skin-contact Riesling).
We are thrilled to share Bannister’s team efforts in this month’s club shipment, which features three bottles (below).
